The time is the Black Era, a period in the not so distant future characterized by a virus that turns humans into zombies. No, they don’t die and come back to life; the virus simply mutates the living being into a vicious, destruction-seeking monster.

20-something Chester Keeton has come to realize what is going on the first day of the infection, often known as ‘The Silence,’ as all forms of communication have ceased to function. After finding his family dead in their home and unable to locate his girlfriend Miranda, Chester finds his best friend Branden to embark on a journey of survival.

This novel is a fast-paced adventure of a story, with the likeable protagonist of Chester struggling with moral dilemmas that many of us would ourselves face if put into the same situation. Written realistically as a log from Chester, as well as a few entries by other characters, the story keeps you reading and wanting more until the very last page.

The only thing I would have liked was to see further development of what the doctors had found about the newest zombie aberrations. That being said, I cannot wait to see what author Austen Rodgers has in store for us readers in the future.

Rating: 4/5 deranged zombies
